Kristin ♥ Rob \\ Oct 3 2009 \\ Highlights

Firstly, a quick note that, despite what it may say in the following video, there is nothing "easy" about planning a wedding. If it was easy for Kristin to put together this amazing day, it was because she had help from the phenomenal DreamGroup Productions.

Everyone knows that photography and videography are two very different things, but one of the big lessons of our four years in wedding videography is how much we share with photographers. Not just in terms of composition and light, but also in telling a story using images only.

Where we differ is in the use of motion and sound. Anyone following this blog knows how much of a role motion plays in our videos, with steadicam shots running through every one of them. This video shows just how potent the sound of a voice can be. And how much of a narrative it can create, giving meaning to what we hope are some pretty striking images.

Thanks to Camille and Chadwick at Jonetsu Photography for being so fun and inspiring to work with. They blogged their amazing photos here.

Dorothy ♥ Andrew \\ Oct 3 2009 \\ SDE

One of the more common questions we receive from couples is "Who chooses your music?" I'm never quite sure if this indicates we have great taste, or terrible taste, in music, until the couple assures me it's the former. Great and unique music is very difficult to come by, and we'd have a much easier time if our brides and grooms weren't so, well, great and unique!

Not only did Dorothy and Andrew not want the typical schlocky wedding music, they specifically requested we avoid romantic music. There was a back and forth for weeks until finally we settled on this song, one of Andrew's favourites. It went well with D&A's other request for the video: that we capture the energy and the vibe and stay away from the "beauty shots." Natalie still went ahead and got an amazing ring shot that fits right in.

Diana ♥ Binh \\ Nov 21 2009 \\ Highlights

This was our last wedding of the season and we really wanted to pull out all the stops. The main challenge in this case was the ceremony, at Ryerson Church. This church is tied with Canadian Memorial for the darkest church in the Lower Mainland. Also the one with the most restrictions on how you can shoot. So we set up 5 cameras and used the best possible lenses to be able to film in low light. It was great having so much coverage in place when that huge tear welled up in Diana's eye.

But the fun part of the day was the roast pig, both filming it being hacked away at and eating it. Incorporating some of the ambient sounds here was a must.

I think it's obvious what the fun part was for Diana and Binh. At the end of the night, Binh confessed that the entire day was just a prelude to the reception. They definitely know how to party!

Super 8 || Sue + Rob's Photo Shoot

I'd like to bring out a video from the spring to show another lesser known feature of Love Story Media videography: Super 8 film coverage. Super 8 - or any film - has many advantages over digital. Colour is more flattering and high contrast light is handled better. Each film frame is unique and lends an organic feel to the footage, whereas digital is sometimes too perfect.

Of course digital is very convenient to work with, and less expensive than film, but every photographer and videographer has a warm place in their heart for "the real thing."

We offer super 8 coverage as an add-on to our digital coverage. We shoot two 3-minute rolls over the course of the day, and mix the footage into the edited video.

Have a look at this photo shoot, with Jasalyn Thorne, from Sue and Rob's wedding in April. (Jasalyn's photos can be seen here.)

And here are the highlights, with even more Super 8 footage:

Gina and Chris || Love Story & Wedding Highlights

Gina and Chris' wedding today gives me the excuse to share one of our little known services with you: the Love Story.

The Love Story is a chance for you to tell your story in your own words... and for us to put together a touching and eye-candy-filled entertainment for your reception guests. These videos are typically 6-8 minutes long, and are the perfect thing to show just before you are introduced, or just after your slideshow.

See more of our Love Stories here.

By the way, Gina and Chris are photographers specializing in wedding photography; their company is called Butter Media. We've shot many weddings with these two and they are our FAVOURITE photographers. It was so fun and almost surreal to see them tie the knot, but such an honour to be on the other side of a camera capturing it all.

Post-Wedding Show Model Shoot

After the "real" shoot and fashion show was wrapped at Brock House last Sunday, Brian Noppe and I took a few models down to the beach for some fun times. It was a bit dark for our taste at that point, but it was definitely a great de-stresser! There are also a few shots from the fashion show itself. Enjoy!

October 17th, 2009 || Judy + Derek = Mah Love || SDE

Ok, wow, seriously, this one was fun. So much work went into this wedding, and Derek wound up being dubbed a "groomzilla." But everything was so beautiful and charged with emotion. Even my $50 parking ticket couldn't take away from what a sweet day this was!

If only I could share footage from the reception... Cedric and I were blown away and grinning constantly - what a fun evening! But this SDE was shown right at the start of the reception; we went straight from the ceremony at So.Cial to Continental Seafood Restaurant in Richmond to do the edit.

So many details became a part of this video, such as the groomsmen's Youtube lesson and the sister of the bride's curling iron burn, necessitating the mango frozen juice container! Also, there's a reason for the shot of the white wedding dress overlapped with the traditional Chinese dress... think layers!

... thanks Leslie from Sakura Photography for help with the "door shot."

And here are the highlights of this wedding:

Stephanie + Nick || Can't Wait

It's a bit of a cliche to say this, but honestly Stephanie and Nick are the nicest couple, so great to be around and talk to. They were so excited to get married, and have been dying to see this video, so here it is. Their love and happiness was infectious and think video gives you an idea of it.

Natalie + Sat || Pure, Pure Love

Natalie and Sat really didn't want to do a first dance, so they hired Bhangra dancers to take care of that for them. It was a beautiful day, though perhaps a tad too hot for everyone, including Sat. Another splendid Dreamgroup wedding, filled with "P.P.L." or Pure Pure Love.

I've had the good fortune of working with Tanya Peters of Milestone Events a few times in over the past three years, so it was great checking out the open house at the new studio in Langley. If you didn't make it, this is what you missed:

Jamie Delaine, Amazing Photographer

There is a wonderful photographer working in Vancouver by the name of Jamie Delaine. I've never met a photog more excited about her craft and what she can do for her clients. She is producing some amazing work that you should see.

I created a video for Jamie a couple of months ago, and now - drum roll! - we are releasing it to you! Enjoy!

Make sure to visit Jamie's site and her blog.

Thanks to Kyle Richtsfeld for the sweet motion graphics work.

September 19th, 2009 || Alyssa + Matt || I Swear It's You

This video started as a surprise same day edit Natalie created for Matt and Alyssa, and now includes a bit more of the day to qualify as "highlights." It was an amazing day, M&A definitely know how to be on camera. And also how to spontaneously kiss at just the right moments. The entire wedding was charmed!

Jasalyn Thorne took us to some sweet photo locations, beginning at Coal Harbour and ending at the new Convention Centre. It was our first time there but this is an instant classic location for wedding imagery. Have a look at Jasalyn's shots here.

See the post from Saturday night (below) for the hazards of being a Steadicam op. The sacrifices we make!

September 19th, 2009 || Love Hurts

To all you videographers and photographers out there, here's living proof that a filter for your lenses is a good investment. Both L-lenses slammed into the gangway, but were no worse for wear. Good times!

I played this for Matt and Alyssa right after, and they laughed so hard... who could blame them?

September 12th, 2009 || Ramona + Kevin || Will You Follow Me?

There are a lot of ways to film a wedding, and I often tell clients that if they hired two separate videographers for their day, they would see two different weddings. We strive to make a fresh start with each wedding and create something that comes out of who the bride and groom are. And that's never been more true than in this video.

For all the planning that goes into a wedding shoot, the best shots always come out of instinct, out of our response to the people, places and events of the the day. Mona and Kevin always speak to one another in a whisper, and seem to communicate on their own wavelength. Luckily, a camera, properly handled, can decipher any language.

Best of luck to Mona as she follows Kevin to New York.

September 4th, 2009 || Tetie + Miguel || SDE

Everyone lucked out on this day. Not least the awesome weather, with what can only be described as "timelapse clouds" over the Celebration Pavilion at Queen E Park. Tetie and Miguel are the perfect match for one another and the emotion definitely came out during the ceremony. At first, Tetie could not stop laughing, then she moved on to tears of joy during the vows. It was really a beautiful, warm ceremony.

The getting ready was a pleasure to film, especially with some extremely shallow depth of field work on the 5D camera. It was also our first time with a very wide lens you can see a in a few shots. Great fun to film and edit!

... and it was a pleasure working with Roger and Holly of Union Photography again!!!

July 18th, 2009 || Jenni + Chad || Ti Amo

It was a pleasure to film and especially to edit this video. Jenni and Chad are the most earnest and warm-hearted couple around, so cheerful and great to film. Chad in particular took us by surprise with his jaw-dropping vows - I think Jenni must have been surprised as well! Not a dry eye, etc.

Hats off to Jenni for managing the most difficult combo: planning and coordinating your own wedding, and enjoying it too!

It was also wonderful to work with Spark Photography for the first time, who chose some perfect locations. They blogged this wedding here.

August 22nd 2009 || Renee + Cameron || Never Say Never || SDE

These two really put the "un" in unconventional, and their wedding today was really an experience, a happening. Maybe there is just one person out there for each of us, but for Renee there is exactly one person: Cameron. And for Cameron, exactly one person: Renee.

Never say never, the other big piece of advice we give couples is to make your wedding your own. Conventions are wonderful if they have meaning for you, but if not don't resist the temptation to veer away from them. I don't think "veer" covers just how far from ordinary this wedding was. The Warcraft references are just the start.

A wonderful day, capped off with the best possible dessert, a same-day-edit! Full credit to Natalie for those amazing detail shots on the 5D (her first time shooting with that camera).

And oh yes, this was my first opportunity to work with Reilly of Blue Olive Photography, fantastic guy.

... And a big thank you goes out to Renee's mother Teresa Lung, and to Abby and Denis Villeneuve who started something wonderful back in May.

July 18th, 2009 || Jennifer + Wilson || Halo of Love

Jennifer and Wilson are a total yin and yang couple, with Wilson being the ferocious planner and Jenn staying cool and letting things happen. Great chemistry and a lot of fun to be around.

Two emotional tea ceremonies, and a truly beautiful ceremony at Ryerson Church made for an amazing morning. Then a manic photo shoot with HN Wedding at some sweet locations (Hotel Vancouver, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden), and finally an uber-cool reception at Floata Restaurant.

Yes, those are goggles on Wilson's face as he goes after the garter, hmm, questionable ;)

July 11th, 2009 // Carolyn + Kevin // Epic Love

It was an amazing mid-July day, not a single cloud in the sky, with bubble tea and free slurpees flowing and keeping everyone cool. Carolyn was radiantly beautiful, see Kevin's stunned reaction in the video below.

Carousel: gorgeous. SFU: gorgeous. Swan-e-set: gorgeous. Carolyn and Kevin: Epic Love.

... and what was in the boxes a couple of posts down helped make this video possible: the Canon 5d Mark II, and our new Steadicam, the Steadicam Pilot!

April 11th, 2009 // Richard + Stephanie // Flowing Love

Richard and Stephanie were so cool and had so much fun throughout the day, it was really a joy to film them. If there's any advice we give our couples on the day of, it's relax and enjoy the ride.

One of our favourite things to create in our videos is flow - we feel that a video should go from image to image smoothly. Each shot should dynamically connect with the next one. We want our editing to be invisible, just highlighting the images themselves.

And with Steph and Rich it wasn't difficult to create some sweet images.

May 24th, 2009 // Sam + Adam // It Starts Here

Sometimes a wedding is like living a lifetime in one day. This Sunday was one of the most fun and emotional weddings we've filmed and just a great experience to shoot. DreamGroup as always set the stage for a beautiful event, perfect and effortless. Hot Wax provided the perfect music mix. And it was awesome working with Erin Gilmore again, who blogged this wedding here.
