We don't usually share our features, but here's one that I dreamt about for quite a while before finally putting it together. Some weddings have pretty much all the elements of a feature film, things that happen during the day, that we collect in the knowledge of how they can be combined. Some of the ingredients are: open and vulnerable displays of emotion, tear-jerking speeches (that are also hilarious), and just something special and magical to set it all off. For this wedding that something was actually the wet and misty weather. Weather can be metaphoric (as any Kurosawa fan can attest to) and speak to something in the story itself. Watch the feature and see if you catch what it is.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12845468505137260322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6405984804651606117.post-27683601800667206652017-11-10T12:46:00.001-08:002017-11-10T12:46:26.761-08:00「 highlights 」ROSA & ANDREW

There are a few theories out there about why certain people end up together. Laws of Attraction, I guess they can be called. We end up with the person we always needed but least expected, and suddenly all those romantic movies and love songs make a lot more sense. This person who was so recently a perfect stranger had become our favourite human and top priority. Our path to the future seems to rewrite itself, not with a jolt but with elegance and a feeling of inevitability. And everyone around us knows that our lives have changed forever, and for better.

That happened to Regan and Charlie. I can't think of a more warm and welcoming pair of families. Just great people, who are actually all trying to be even better. Who actually care and who are not afraid to show it. I hope that love and realness comes through in this video, captured and edited with love.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12845468505137260322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6405984804651606117.post-63697325738695073822016-07-21T17:48:00.001-07:002016-07-21T17:48:23.239-07:00「 sde 」SAMANTHA & JARED

Sam and Jared seem like opposites, with Jared being reserved and stoic, and Samantha being extroverted and expressive 24/7. It's a match made in heaven.

Sam's mom also had to work hard to keep her emotions in check. It must be quite a thing to watch your baby get married. The entire household was filled with so much happiness and love as the bride got ready; I did what I could to capture it all.

Three shout outs: Stephanie, Sam's planner who double-tasked as a bridesmaid! The priest at Our Lady of the Assumption, such a great human being and an Irish accent too. And finally Matt Kennedy, who I finally had a chance to work with. He will do anything for the shot, including climbing a tree with everyone nervously looking on. Go Matt! (Don't fall.)

The best part of life is the unexpected. I think everyone likes to act like she or he knows what to expect and how to handle any situation. But we live for curveballs.

Having filmed quite a few Chinese weddings I thought I had seen it all. The groomsmen busted down the door, just like all the other groomsmen. But then a twist, not shown in the video: they turned around and locked the bridesmaids out of the bride's room, winning back some of their red pockets in the process! Hilarious. Definitely a good moment when every person in the room is smiling.

Cutting this SDE was pretty exciting and threw me quite a curveball itself. I met Cecilia and Daniel once before the wedding and they seemed very loving but also quiet. And so I chose two songs for their video to reflect what I thought the wedding would be like. I was totally wrong and had to scramble to find a better song. I stumbled across Soar by Gyom and immediately licensed it from the Music Bed. It's a huge rush that evolves into something deeper and more gentle. Perfect!

From that point on the video just came together. Such a great feeling to show an SDE for the first time, it never gets old.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12845468505137260322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6405984804651606117.post-48036670257590920792016-04-18T23:04:00.002-07:002016-04-18T23:04:49.043-07:00「 highlights 」TINA & MIKE

This is the second time I’ve captured a wedding where it seemed like the tent would get picked up and tossed by the powerful winds. The extreme weather was on everyone’s minds and in the background of many of my shots. It gave me a great excuse to shoot some slo-mo as well as a slew of time-lapses. In the end, Vancouver just put on a show for us, as the rain stopped just in time for the photo shoot and the day closed with a gorgeous sunset.

Tina and Mike have been together for a long, long time, and they’d known for much of that time that they would get married. So at first they just wanted a simple wedding. In the end Tina’s vision and attention to detail came together in Science World’s Patio overlooking False Creek.

Rhoda and Chris shared their amazing story with me when we first met. It was truly cosmic how they came together, and Coastal Church played a big part in that. Naturally, they wanted to hold their wedding there as well. It’s a unique space with a lot of angles you don’t normally find in a church.

I love details, annd I tend to overuse close-ups, and sometimes wish I captured more wide shots. On this occasion, I saved the big wide for their kiss, the only shot that shows the impressive view from the back of the church.

The family traditions on display in the morning were a joy to capture. Rhoda was happy to let her mom be in charge of each step of the process, and I think enjoyed being able to be a part of it as I did.

The day ended back at the Four Seasons, with an amazing choreographed dance that I scampered around to properly capture. Chris is a pretty calm and quiet presence, and I didn’t see those moves coming!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12845468505137260322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6405984804651606117.post-87200447025921005502015-07-14T14:56:00.001-07:002015-07-14T14:56:43.343-07:00「 nde 」JENN & MATT

If there's a family I'd like to be adopted by, it's the Lams. Mom and dad Lam had three lovely children, who all inherited their father's knack for telling a good story. And who all grew up and hired Love Story Media to film their weddings! It was an honour to be able to tell their stories. It has been a blast to hang out with these folks three times over, and I'm kind of sad that it's over!

I met Matt for the first time on the day of the wedding. It takes a wonderful guy to match someone like Jenn, and that he is. You can see it in his eyes when he listens to her. Her world is his.

Lam weddings are an outpouring of love, thoughtfulness and togetherness. It's basically a group of friends and family who all love each other. Everyone seems comfy and at home. The handmade signs - beautiful calligraphy by Jenn herself - enhanced the homey feel.

Weather has been on everyone's mind here in Vancouver, with a giant cloud of smoke covering the city for over a week. Gradually, winds picked up and a bit of rain here and there started to clear the air. But Saturday July 11th was the day it really rained. But not all day. The weather cooperated. Just enough rain to clear the air, but of course not enough to put out the fire.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12845468505137260322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6405984804651606117.post-25560228586566802042015-06-23T17:25:00.000-07:002015-06-23T17:25:06.042-07:00「 feature 」STEPHANIE & JEREMY

Just one shot was set up in this video. I won’t have to tell you which it is. Right after shooting it, Fan asked my second shooter not to include it in the video. “Jenny won’t like it.” This was not communicated to me and it went in. Later I apologized, but Jenny said, “That HAS to stay in!”

Fan gets “revealed” to us quite quickly, but for Jenny, getting to know him was a long and wonderful process. She describes him as a treasure box. I'm sure there's even more for her to discover about this underwear model.

Mr. Treasure Box is a Porsche-sponsored racing driver who grew up on 90’s music. Jenny understands him well, but his musical tastes baffle her. I wonder who chooses the music when he drives her around?

Jenny and Fan knew exactly what they wanted from their video. Details, Vancouver scenery, and the Rolls, all with a romantic/fairytale feel.

Harumi Suzuki put this wedding together, and somehow had time help to coordinate the filming on top of everything else. I’ve said it before, but I do appreciate a fellow workaholic! This time, her “Dream Team” included photographers flown in from HK. They fell in love with Vancouver and told me they just wanted to stay.

That’s the reason for the first part of the video. It’s beautiful here. The Mitchell trilogy concludes!

I read some Jim Carrey tweets last night. Aside from being a hilarious person, he believes that in our lives we are only able to experience a fraction of existence. "As we get older, we feel smaller." I don't have children, but I imagine that having children - three amazing daughters let's say - brings home this truth.

(In case you haven't seen it, here's that other gorgeous Mitchell wedding, from Whistler BC.)

Luckily, as time passes, the Mitchell family keeps getting bigger! The circle grows. Thinking about this stuff can make you crazy, so it's nice to have some outstanding wine, whiskey and live music to remind you of the present moment. And someone with a camera to capture it all!

We are so grateful to the Mitchells for making us a part of their unforgettable celebrations. We feel like part of the family!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12845468505137260322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6405984804651606117.post-31063549180644902982014-08-28T13:04:00.003-07:002014-08-28T16:46:48.468-07:00「 concept 」 STEPHANIE & JEREMY: F*REVER

After Angelina & James' concept video in the spring, it was time for a new challenge. This video is a mix of scripted and unscripted scenes. I really wanted to challenge myself to write, shoot and edit scenes that were actually planned out and rehearsed. It was the perfect collaboration with Steph and Jer as we came up with the scenes, shot take after take, and sometimes threw out scenes that didn't work. They really took full advantage of what CONCEPT can be.

When you watch, please take a moment to enjoy the opening/closing credits. It took me a full day to create them. It's a mix of time-lapse and stop motion animation, and turning the scrabble board into the worlds smallest but coolest film marquee.

There are two sections showing Steph and Jer looking through their photos. This is meant to replace the typical slide show that couples have at their wedding. I wanted to show the actual photos and have them share anecdotes about each image. And I wanted to find a neat way to segue into Steph's childhood gymnastics videos, lovingly shot by her dad.

Quick mention of Whytecliff Park. This was such a beautiful shoot! I can't get over it. I'm so happy to close the video with this gorgeous location. Thanks to Jeanie Ow for setting up this shoot - Steph and Jer's engagement shoot.

I'd like to thank Chermaine Wu for selecting the music from the Music Bed. Until the last moment I was editing without music, hoping that everything would gel once scoring was added. Chermaine chose perfect pieces and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out.

And most of all, thanks to Stephanie and Jeremy. They put so much thought, planning and time into this project. And they also fed me whenever they could! The upside of Jer's "hanger" issues is that I get to eat all the time.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12845468505137260322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6405984804651606117.post-12110741294115894862014-08-26T15:07:00.001-07:002014-08-26T15:07:58.292-07:00「 highlights 」ANGELINA & JAMES

I've had the privilege of creating CONCEPT videos with two couples this year. In case you missed it, here's Angelina and James' CONCEPT, showing their lives at work and at play. I wasn't there for the very beginning of their story, but I have seen a lot of it. And to be there filming the day when they finally tied the knot was sweet indeed.

Ang and James are two real people, with a very real connection. It's something they also share with their close circle of friends. The love and support in this tight circle of friends is always apparent and inspiring.

Visually the day was punctuated by the epic Cleveland Dam, the stunning work of Erin Gilmore, just enough flowers and pops of colour, and a lot of flying bits of things (bubbles, confetti, water, and dandelions) that were just made for slomo. And lets not forget the custom Nike kicks that James told me about approximately 100 times! Yes, they were indeed eye catching!

So hats off to two thoughtful and loving people, who are wonderful as individuals and even stronger together.

When I see someone extremely brand-aware and proud of the brands they are wearing, I don’t scoff and shake my head. I nod in acceptance and understanding. I love brands!!

I don’t think I’ve ever met a more perfectly matched couple. Stephanie is someone who instinctively speaks her mind and expresses herself, things that are very hard for many of us to do. And she truly bares her flaws, as she did today in her vows AND her speech. That takes strength.

Kevin is easily the most hip and informed groom I’ve ever worked with. He was the first person to tell me about Über and a whole host of great travel apps. More importantly, he is deeply kind and thoughtful. Like a pillow for Steph to rest her head on. Like I said, perfect!

Oh and they both love brands! This wedding was FULL of them. Yes, I’m talking about Side One, Elsa Corsi, Ganache Patisserie, The Apartment, Petite Pearl, Vancouver art Gallery and the Hyatt Regency totally tricked out by Debut events. Manolo’s replaced by H&M flats when we entered the forest. S&K are only satisfied with the best, and it was an honour to be included among them. And….sometimes even Canadian Tire is a good brand :D

My favourite parts of this video? The cross-cutting of gifts and alcohol between the bride and groom. It used to be so hard to make cross-cutting really flow, but now it comes naturally. Incorporating clips from the rehearsal was a nice surprise for S&K. Best of all was the moment where Stephanie suddenly revealed that she was wearing her mom’s Qipao from her own wedding.

Kevin hoped that the timeline would work out. It really didn’t! Stephanie and Kevin indeed know how to “milk every moment” of the day! But hey, we all enjoyed those moments just as much.

Introducing CONCEPT!

This is an add-on or standalone video feature now offered by Love Story Media. It is an open-ended video project telling the story of you and the most wonderful person in your life. Angelina and James' video is mostly in the documentary format. Future videos will run the gamut from totally unscripted to written and rehearsed. Drop me a line to find out more and start developing your very own film!

I've known Jimmy and Angel for a couple years now, and as soon as they got engaged they informed me they'd like me to be their videographer. How much of an honour is that! We then chatted about doing a behind the scenes documentary about their life together. And their concept film was born!

I captured Ang and Jimmy on a variety of occasions, from a dinner party they hosted, to their engagement shoot, to a day at work. It was a blast and a great learning process as I combined all these elements into one piece. I am so happy with how it all turned out, and now I'd like to share it with you! Enjoy our first CONCEPT film!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12845468505137260322noreply@blogger.com0
